Who I am Meant to Be

In a world where wonder whirls in the sky,

I lay with my hair in a tangle of curls in a field,

cleansed in a warm summer’s glow.

Thoughts of the future fade far into the setting sun.

Jukebox tunes, hooped skirts, the Wild West, school-teacher—

this is who I am and who I want to be.

Though my physical being is stuck in reality,

I am living through books and imaginings.

A small log cabin, the warm glow of a fire,

Little children’s hic-hic, a gentle husband’s arms.

I am the teacher in a one-room school house

we built ourselves, to try to light a fire in little ones’ eyes

This is who I am.

This is who I want to be.

The world I live in is one of secluded peace

and I am happy.

Though in a quiet place, I hear;

I hear the real world calling;

I hear the cry of orphans;

I hear the cry of an unborn child;

I hear the cry of the hungry;

I hear pain, I hear sadness, and I hear the real world.

They all call out and my heart breaks,

am I willing to let my world go to save others?

To make others happy?

So I leave my happy little fantasy.

I work hard to make better.

I will teach, I will pray, I will love, and I will care.

I know I can’t live in the past

so I try to make a better future

This is who I am.

This is who I want to be.

To make others happy.

To fight for the weak.

To give hope to the hopeless.

To give up all I have.

I will be the one,

to make a change in this world

of ever increasing darkness,

to make others happy.

In a world where wonder whirls in the sky,

I teach to help see that beauty.

Though I may not have everything,

seeing a smiling face is all I need.

And then that smile can be passed on,

to add a little laughter, a little hope

a little strength, and a whole lot of love.

This is who I am meant to be.
