Where I'm From

Where I'm From

By - Anjali Patel

I am from books,

from secrets and mythical legends.

I am from the long walks on the beach.

(Hot and peaceful,

It felt like paradise.)

I am from chilled winds

the shimmering snow,

which made me tingle when felt upon

,but tears when it was gone

I’m from curry and dancing,

from Das and Kapoor.

I’m from the architects

and the engineers,

from pressure of grades and lifelong dreams.

I’m from the Shiv temple to memorizing

the verses of the Bhagavad Gita.

I’m from icy and cold cousins,

pancakes and Starbucks.

From the sweat that perspired on

the farmlands,

the deafening pain that was felt on my

father’s neck.

Deep down inside my closet lay a

soft and pink teddy Bear.

Bringing back the wanted memories

of play and misery.

Taunting the small flashbacks—

Generations of hatred, passion, love and guilt—

where my snowflakes and cotton were my everything.
