Where I'm From

Location

Where I’m From

I am from Indian descendants,

 from the Himalayan mountains.

I am from the rushing streets,

 that carry and blow dirt

 from here to there.

I am from the flowering fields,

on which farmers and sun beat upon.

I’m from the parents

who were welcomed to America years ago.

I am from the year the hurricanes ruled,

both Hurricane Mitch and Hurricane Georges.

I’m from blisters on hands and bruises on knees,

days the monkey bars seemed to reach to me.

I am from the cooked vegetables and biryani

 supposedly holding powers,

that would let me immediately grow up.

Growing up in the piles and adventures of

The Magic Tree House and Charlotte’s Web,

I am from the cries and screams of my baby brother,

from the drooled toys and shows of Blues Clues.

Teaching and learning about religious views,

 I’m from annoying Sunday afternoons

filled with questions from the younger one.

I am from the textbooks and protractors,

and a brother dealing with fractions.

I’m from the mats and sounds of coarse voices,

from martial arts ending in success.

Sitting with footballs flying over heads,

watching the sibling growing with NFL passion,

I am from Seahawk jerseys and football games,

from on TV to high school to little league.

I’m from walks and jogs to Silver Lake,

from familiar neighbors of 9 years,

from cutting and growing new flowers each year,

from where the values and fun combine to

make this small family that I’m from.
