What is She?

Location

What is she?
What is she?
High Yellow? Or black?
The mother looks at her child.
The newborn looks back.
Skin dark as charcoal,
Light brown eyes,
What a sight!
But wait,
No.

The mother looks at her child,
The newborn looks back.
She sets the babe down,
Looks at the dog,
And orders,
Attack...

What is she?
What is she?
High Yellow? Or black?
The mother looks at her second child,
The second newborn looks back.
Skin a vivid chocolate brown,
Hair a collection of naps,
A beautiful baby!
But still,
No.

The mother looks at her second child,
The second newborn looks back.
Walking to a stranger's door,
She sets the babe down,
Whispering, "There is
So much you
Lack."

What is she?
What is she?
High Yellow? Or black?
The mother looks at her third child,
The third newborn looks back.
Skin smooth, rich caramel,
Hazel eyes shine bright,
Dazzling be the babe!
But it is still,
Not quite.

The mother looks at her third child,
The third newborn looks back.
Handing the babe a broom,
Wrapping her in rags,
She will stay but,
"Work! No
Slack!"

What is she?
What is she?
High Yellow? Or black?
The mother looks at her fourth child,
The fourth newborn looks back.
Skin a bright, golden yellow,
"Good hair" on her head.
None more beautiful.
This time it is,
YES!

The mother looks at her fourth child,
The fourth newborn looks back.
Wrapped in classy Versace,
Laying in her bassinet,
The mother answers,
"She is NOT
black..."
