What Poetry has Taught Me

What Poetry has Taught Me

by Ashanti Stewart

Poetry is a sound from deep inside the heart.

It doesn't have to rhyme and that is a start.

It tells a tale and has moral.

It has a sweet and a sad sound.

It allows your emotions to run wild.

What poetry has taught me...

It taught me to feel. It taught me to speak.

It taught me to kneel.

Bow down to my past. Except its pain.

Become a better person as Nanny would say.

It taught me to grow and to overcome.

I learned to be a young lady as my mom would say.

Poetry has taught me so much in this age.

Poetry can rhyme. Poetry can be a song.

Most importantly Poetry has a message all along.

Sometimes it doesn't make sense.

Read it twice.

You will learn something if you give it a try.
