When do you grow up and what’s its result?
Better question, what decides that you’re an adult?
Some people say paying taxes, getting your license, finishing school…
…drink at the bar, be in the jury, or finally move.
But all these things can come from you rising in age.
That number doesn’t say your mind’s on the same page.
When did your world truly change?
Though eyes unclouded and no longer deranged?
From being mindless, captive beings lead on a leash…
…to those who walk their own path not leaving one piece.
To really grow up and see the world as it is…
…and not try to see it for what it isn’t.
My time didn’t come at 18 or 21.
It came when my life was but a decade in the sun.
I cried and cried, but no one came.
Not my parents or teachers or strangers the same.
I cried when those parents didn’t stay together.
I cried when those teachers said my grades could be better.
I cried when those strangers pitied my sisters and brother.
I cried because my spit had turned to something bitter.
But then I saw when each day was the same…
…that this life I had was no simple game.
Each player was different and had their own level.
They could either advance or stay disheveled.
I knew things wouldn’t change if the tears still flowed.
So I turned off the faucet and continued to row.
If no one could help even when I could plead…
…then I’ll be my own hero and plant my own seed.
I’ll grow to be as tall as the sky.
I’ll be the one to make all my siblings fly.
I won’t need help if I can do it myself…
…which I wanted to do since I had turned twelve.
This is when I grew up on sight.
Now I know life isn’t just up and bright.
I used to think that when you’re alone…
…you should wait for their help in your zone.
But now I see that’s not the one answer.
You can find your own ways and be your own master.
You can be independent and fill your own cup.
That’s what I consider to be my glow up.
