What am I?

I am a dark skinned child
seeking for answers
Who am I?
What am I?
Where do I come from?
I am tired of being labeled African American/Black
How do you know that I am African American?
And I am definitely not black
Take a good look at me
Remember back when you learned the difference
between BLACK and BROWN
I could be Ethiopian, Jamaican for all we know
but because I am chocolate colored
I am assumed to be African descended
I was given the last name Pinckney
Take a minute to google that name
That man does not look like me
Pull out your history books
That man does not look like me
But his last name is mine so he must be a part of me
I just want to know about the other part
The part that is forever lost and covered by a last name
I just want to know about my ancestors
The ones taken against their will
the ones who do look like me
The dominant race that made me
this dark beautiful chocolate covered child that I am today
But until then,
I want to be labeled as brown
I may not know my race
But I do know that I am brown
