We're Up

His foot catches mine and he laughs.

I'm down.

Even when I get back up,

the sting

reminds me of where I belong:

the ground.

Her eye catches mine and she laughs.

I'm up.

My heart skips a beat and I know,

deep down,

she is what it means to love.

Unmatched.

I whip around when I hear it.

I'm down.

They say it with wavering fear:

Faggot.

I forget who the scared one is.

Again.

I know I've got love to give her.

I'm up.

She takes me somewhere without it

(the fear).

Our hands lock, two links in a chain.

We're up.

He trips me and he pushes me.

She holds me and I hold her.

They lose.

We're up.
