The Wendigo (inspired by the Fort Kent Massacre)

I never told them there's a devil in me

It first grabbed hold in the trenches

Only for an instant did I feel it’s caress

A brief rage engulfed my senses

Many fell victim while I was possessed

I never told them there’s a devil in me

I never told her there is evil in me

If she knew, I would lose her trust

Now I just wanted to save lives

Fort Kent held such promise for us

Even that turned out to be lies

I never told her there is evil in me

I never told them there’s a monster in me

They brought me their sick and hurt

My name was celebrated all around

I tried to busy myself with my work

But in me was a hatred for all mankind

I never told them there’s a monster in me

I never told them there’s a savage in me

The rats came and they brought death

The villagers succumbed one by one

Then my dear wife drew her last breath

After that, I knew I could help no one

I never told them there’s a savage in me

I never told them there’s a Wendigo in me

I learned the word from the traders in town

It lived to kill and to eat human flesh

Surrounded by sadness, my soul drowned

It consumed me until nothing was left

I never told them there’s a Wendigo in me

I never told them there’s a cannibal in me

I waited until nightfall, then door to door

Slaughtering every person I could find

I ripped their bodies like a wild boar

I left their bodies in the open, unashamed

I never told them there’s a cannibal in me

They do not know there’s a killer still here

Even after long decades without emerging

The Wendigo lives on in many hearts

Waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting

For when they see the face of a corpse

They do not know there’s a killer still here.
