We Don't Eat

           We don’t eat,

in fear of our hearts breaking,

from the words and looks we are given.

          We don’t eat,

    in fear of being judged.

We don’t eat at the table,

at the school,

at the restaurant.

       We don’t eat,

in fear of people telling us

“There is a certain way you need to be to fit in. Be that way and you’ll be okay.”

To girls,

that means

you need to be thin like a stick

and have long, lean legs

with a flat tummy.

“Conform to society, conform to society, conform to society, conform to s o c i e t y.”

And so we did.
