We Are Society

We blame society

For the way we see our bodies.

We blame society

For the pressure on us to perform.

We blame society

For their expectations.

It's easy to blame society,

When it's a big, immobile block.

It's easy to blame society,

When it's them and not us.

It's easy to blame society,

When it's not made of individuals

Like us.

But it is.

Society does not have one expectation

Of us and what our lives should be.

Society does not have one definition,

Of success and beauty.

Society is a plethora of minds,

Of people just like you.

Society is a spaghetti of opinions,

That we choose to listen to.

Not everything they say,

Will always be right.

We have to learn to filter,

And we have to learn to fight.

Not everything they say,

Will always be wrong.

We have to take the good,

And leave the rest alone.

Not all society's voices,

Are talking to you.

Not all the expectations

Are for you to carry through.

Why should you listen,

To all of society?

Listen to those you love and trust.

Forget the rest, please.

You don't have to listen,

To the voices that you hear.

Don't consider their opinion,

Let your care-free melt your fear.

If you want to change society -

Replace its lies with what is true -

If you want to change their minds,

Start by changing you.

That's all you can do.

You can't change society.

But if we all changed our own minds for good,

Where would society be?

Stop blaming society,

Because it's me and you.

Stop blaming voices,

You don't have to listen to.

Stop blaming society.

There is something we can do.

The expectations you accept, you perpetuate,

But ideas that you reject will die.

We need to change society.

Together let's try.
