We Are People Too

Layers peeled away

Stripped down to my very core

Weakness has left me

You read those lines and you wonder

what they could mean.

Could they be about a young girl

just starting to piece her heart back together?

Could they be about a man

that has to finally face the inevitable truth?

What if I told you that they are not about a singular person,

but a group of people.

A group of people that have been

ridiculed, taunted, shunned, and abused.

Why has this happened to a very unfortunate group?

Because they do not conform to

society's ideals.

Because they refuse to stay

hidden away.

Because they do not fit into the

confines of a box that determines

gender, race, or sexuality.

This isn't just one group anymore.

Now this kind of abuse is

everywhere.

Just because these people are different

does not make them an abomination.

They are not the disease,

but the people that continue to degrade them are.

What the world fails to understand

is that we are people too.
