The Unseen Society
I am a member of the Unseen Society
No one documents my hurts and pains
No one reacts to my triumphs and gains
When I walk by, they do not wave or say hello, because they do not recognize me, and that is supposed to be okay, because I do not recognize them.
I am a member of the Unseen Society
No one asks me how I am
No one spares a helping hand
When I walk by my job I hold my head high, despite my urge to duck and run. Countless hours of my day vanished for a paycheck coming at the end of the month. The company doesn’t even know my name.
I am a member of the Unseen Society
No one invites me anywhere
No one seems to really care
When I walk home I am consumed with the overpowering silence that surrounds me. There is no one waiting, so why stay?
I am a member of the Unseen Society
No one sees me laugh or cry
No one sees my talents hidden inside
When I walk by the local park I watch the people for no other reason than curiosity itself. Being enclosed is too suffocating. In the distance I can hear my name being called, but I know it’s not for me.
I am a member of the Unseen Society
No one spares a second glance
No one smiles just because they can
When I walk back home I stop in my tracks. On the side of the building, a rugged man with weary eyes looks up at me. I’ve never seen him before. So you see, I have found another member of the Unseen Society.
