Unfulfilled: Moments of Emptiness

Location

Hush and the room lies still
not a peep can be heard —
a fridge door open
or a blender cycle.
yet the utter peace lacks ingredient x.

An assembly of birds gently flutter over the skylight
the sofa engulfs me in its warm embrace
not one stress rests upon my lap
only my cat and a heated blanket,
yet the utter peace lacks ingredient x.

Ephemeral, the peace of solitude leaves quickly.
As familiar footsteps creak the floorboard,
the warmth of family enters.
Thereafter ensues laughter with Cheshire smiles,
yet even such joy lacks ingredient x.

Like life on this planet,
the feeling comes and goes,
a bowl without cereal,
a clock with no hands,
no ingredient x to make life whole.

What it is thats missing,
I am not quite sure,
though it can be found, this I know.
but ingredient x cloaks itself well.

It may take one million ticks and a thousand tocks,
but it can be found for each one of us,
a sense of fulfillment that leaves no regret.
Henceforth, I relentlessly continue the search,
for nothing else can suffice for my ingredient x.
