Times The World Went Quiet

The world went quiet when the sun was too bright in daddy’s eyes,

And five seconds later,

Everything was upside down,

And broken glass was tangled in my hair.

The world went quiet when I hid behind my momma’s leg,

As the mourners paid their respects

To my grandfather’s casket.

The world went quiet when I realized my first kiss was wasted

On a boy

Who only wanted my body.

The world went quiet when my mother

Got the diagnosis

Of her new illness.

The world went quiet when he told me he wanted someone else,

And I had to stand there,

Pretending to be happy,

As he smiled and blushed

At someone who wasn’t me.

My world went quiet when she told me the news,

I should have been happy for her,

But I was scared of losing her,

My only sister,

My best friend.

My world went quiet when I realized that the only reason

It stopped hurting

Was because I stopped feeling.

Me
