THEM vs. US

Sitting, seeing, staring.                                 Sitting, seeing, staring.

Back of the class,                                           Front of the class,

Last row, last seat.                                        First row, first seat.

I don’t understand the work;                        I don't understand this;

Everyone knows I don’t.                                Everyone thinks I do.

Embarrassment, ridicule.                            Embarrassment, ridicule.

 Expected to fail,                                             Expected to win,

Expected to quit.                                            Expected to succeed.

Teachers get mad at me.                            Teachers talk to me.

What am I supposed to do?                        Why don't they help him?

I can’t learn this,                                            I can help him,

I can’t ask about this,                                   I can teach him,

I can’t understand this.                                I can be his friend.

School is for THEM:                                      School is for US:

Intelligent, wealthy, perfect.                       Dumb, smart, jocks, nerds.

I wrote this poem for the kids who think no one thinks about them in class. Someone in there is thinking about helping you, but sometimes they are too scared.
