It's that time of August
Everyone gathers around the television
Friends and family
Flags in one hand,
Beer in the other
Lifted spirits muffle the opening ceremony
But where's David?
David isn't on the couch
or on a lounge chair
David is in the basement
Heart racing
Sweat pumping
Muscles aching
Mind straining
Weights clanking
With one last huff he moves the seat back.
No one to spot him
No one to encourage him.
He envelops his face with the towel
and wipes the sweat off his brow carefully because he knows,
someday, somewhere,
the world will be watching him,
just as his family is watching upstairs,
as he wipes his face after his record-breaking race
at the reunion of the worlds greatest
to pursue ultimate achievement
Because its not about the reunion going on upstairs
but the one happening on screen
or the one being assembled
in weight rooms across the world.
