Spoken Word- Our Future

We are drowning in a world that is filled with sorrow

People long for the past instead of looking towards tomorrow

They said life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get

Well think of it this way, are you happy yet?

So many people are sick, hungry and homeless even more are just tired of being at home less

Working a 9 to 5 job they don't even get, much less understanding how they aren’t happy yet

Life isn’t supposed to be as easy as pi, but it can be as long as you remember to try

Just because someone can recite 3.14159 doesn't mean they know it's the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter

Stay in school, don’t do drugs, and you know to be smart because as long as you try life will be sweet, never tart

Bitter people who always preach that they have all the answers then ask us questions

And how are we supposed to know if we are headed in the right direction?

Well look around and if you think you have what it takes, don’t take shortcuts, cut corners; you gotta earn what you make

A job j-o-b can be justification of benevolence or it could just mean you’re just over broke and can’t tell the difference between yourself and the next bloke

On the street corner begging for change

Change is what I see for the future not something I see that should be tossed away or given to someone who doesn’t believe in what the next day

Holds for our future; we need a new approach, a way to inform people that what they think they should say, speak their mind, and if they are on the brink

Of a new idea it could be something so earth-shattering, ground-breaking, 21st-century, never-before-seen, new but not improved because if its new it never existed before

Life shouldn’t be a bore

It should be exciting and unique

Moments like this when someone makes you stop and think

Of what you should or shouldn’t do

maybe what’s holding you back is something old or something new

and how are we supposed to live our dreams if all we see is a broken reality?

We need to

Stop

And think of all the things that make us great

Of all the victories, faults and mistakes

Of all the brave men and women that fought in plenty of wars

Across seas for you and me, its what makes our country roar

And scream with pride, “This. Is. America!” land of the free, home of the brave

And we are all just people floating in an ocean of sorrow, acting like we can never make a wave

That is big enough

Or strong enough

Or important enough

To change the world.

Because in the end, we don’t want a world filled with sorrow

We don’t want to destroy our last chance at a good tomorrow

We want hardworking people

honest characters

and peaceful minds

Because what’s a lemon of a world without a lemon rind?

And while we are at it we might want to address the discrimination, the problems with education, the stereotypes and the lack of determination

People who refuse to contribute

To something so necessarily absolute

As the future of our world.
