Some Are Bilingual

Love and abuse speak the same language; -

“Don’t you

love me?

want to make me proud?”

Love and abuse speak the same language; -

Some hugs light the insides up

-Warm and sugary-

Like a Christmas tree, but

Some hugs turn cold like

Demons whispering in

Your bed.

Love and abuse speak the same language; -

A playful punch, a laugh

Just a game of tag

Under the merry sun

A punch, a grunt

Just a game of dominance

Under the haunted moon.

Love and abuse speak the same language; -

A scream, a shout

A mother tells her daughter,

“Clean the dishes right now!”

A scream, a shout

A father tells his son,

“You’re just not good enough, son.”

Love and abuse speak the same language; -

“You’re not my daughter”

Mom, I’m adopted

There is comfort in belonging

“You’re not my daughter”

Mom, I’m gay

There are no prayers for the outcasts

Good thing that some people

Only speak

One language

Instead of two.
