Sisters Before Princes, Or Something Like That

Once upon a time, there lived a king and a queen in a beautiful castle atop a hill. The royal couple ruled over their kingdom with wisdom and grace, and for many years their people enjoyed prosperity and peace. Eventually, the king and queen had a beautiful baby girl, whom they named Rosalind, in honor of the beautiful rose flowers that were blooming as the princess was born. The royal couple invited people from throughout the land to visit their newborn daughter and the bestow their blessings. However, one visitor decided to bring with her more than just well wishes. This visitor was named Impius the Wicked, and she came from the wildlands up north. Impius had long held a grudge against the king and queen, for she had always longed for a home in their kingdom but had never secured one. Bitter with resentment, Impius decided to curse the baby Rosalind, putting her into an enchanted sleep that she could only be awoken from by a true love’s kiss. The king and queen were devastated, but vowed to get their daughter back by any means. And though she did not know it, for the next 16 years, hundreds of suitors visited the sleeping princess, all trying to awaken her with their true love’s kiss. None of the suitors were right for the young girl, so none stayed with her very long. Perhaps the only person, besides the king and the queen, to stay at the princess’s side was her handmaiden – a girl of the same age named Lillian. For years, Lillian waited on Rosalind, making sure that despite her slumbering state, the princess was comfortable and well-cared for. As years of fruitless attempts to awaken Aurora went by, Lillian’s heart broke for the princess, who she considered her friend, and for all the life she was missing out on. As Rosalind’s 17th birthday approached, the king and the queen were becoming desperate. For years that had watched as their daughter’s slumber remained unbroken, and as hundreds of unsuccessful suitors passed through their home. Lillian’s heart broke for the king and queen also, who had never gotten the time they deserved with their daughter. As the king and queen looked over their daughter weeping, Lillian bent down and kissed her dear friend on the forehead. Much to the amazement of everyone in the room, Rosalind’s eyes flickered open, and she looked up to see all the faces of those who loved and cared for her so dearly. The king and queen rejoiced, so grateful to have their daughter’s curse lifted, and Lillian’s heart burst with love for her friend. It was the true love shown by Lillian to the princess who became her best friend that broke the wicked curse. And they lived happily ever after.
