She Is A Trending Topic

Location

Every morning

She looks to the clouds

Begging each one to take her

She wants to live on them

And be taken away from her hurt

Every day

She tells people she is okay

When deep inside

She is broken and damaged

Her heart numb to her pain

Every night

She wishes on the stars

To make tonight her last

She doesn't want to wake up

And face the world again

Yesterday morning

She packed up her room

So it would be easier for her parents

She got dressed in her best

And put a smile on her face

Yesterday

She seemed to be fighting

Some inner demon inside

She had a smile that was slipping

And her eyes no longer sparkled

Last night

She wrote her goodbyes

And asked for forgiveness

She said she didn't like herself

That she was too sad to live

This morning

She was found in the bathroom

As dead as she felt inside

She looked so happy

And no one could imagine why

Today

She was all anyone talked about

How they missed her so much

She didn't hear the nice things said

Because all she knew were her bullies' words

Tonight

She is a trending topic

Everyone begs for retweets in her honor

She only knew these people

Because they were the ghosts that haunt her

Em Anekaf

I struggle with mental illness and have been suicidal. This nearly made me cry. I think it's absolutely wonderful the way you really hit on the time line: "every morning", "every day", "yesterday", "last night", etc. To the outside eye, suicide is a sudden thing, but to the victim, it's a long, miserable process. I'm very appreciative that you hit on this.

Also, pointing out the way people insert themselves into a suicide was genius. You weren't involved because you chose not to involve yourself, but you don't hesitate to post and tweet about it after the fact. That's something that doesn't get talked about much because, I think, those who kill themselves rarely recieve much support in life and it looks callous to challenge it when they recieve it during death.

This is a wonderful poem and I adore you for writing it!
