Second Revolution
I believe that this country is at war
Our children soldiers
Fighting on the frontlines
Since Junior High
While the students
Are taking bullets
These so called activists
Are focusing on their texts messages
Or I should say tweets
Twitter notifications each
A new declaration
Or battles and separation
In the military we are all green
Same side sees no difference between you and me
Yet we’re being viewed as enemies
Politicians saying we need to be unique
Yet criticizing the differences
With words piercing like bullet
With the message of not belonging to this country
This melting pot of nationality
Continuing to judge identity
Like we are still in the civil war
White republicans holding on to belief from generations before
It’s is like we
are still in an era of slavery
Viewing other people as fractions of a person
Feeling seen as less than
Land of the free
Where there still isn’t equality
And though we’ve made progress
There still isn’t universal acceptance
Their still judgement and rejection
It is like there is no opposition
From politicians
To our current segregation
Or discrimination
That is so obvious to our children
When kids now have to be the ones to make the difference
When children and now generals of protests
When teens are the first to speak
About the inequality we still see
When students have to fight for their safety
Because it seems like the leaders of society
Are no longer fighting for our protection
Instead they hand us weapons
And tell us we are in charge of our own defense
It’s time of government raises the white flag
Surrounders to itself once again
Let the next generation
Put and end to this need for a second revolution
We make fun of pageant queens
For being plastic dolls of beauty
That only seem to say world peace
Maybe the joke is the fact
We can’t even imagine
Our nation without conflict
We focus on television
And celebrity drama
That we deny the blood flowing in our own backyard
Lost lives in the streets
Of our cities
We know violence,
Tired of being silenced
These adolescents
Are speaking up for once
Just like Martin Luther King
We have a dream
That someday
We will actually reach the equality
And the United States
Will feel like a safe place
Until that day we’ll Teach our children to live without judgement
Because the mindset of the nation
Needs to stop being split
The rights of others needs to be universal
Along with respect of where everyone comes from
Gender, race, religion, sexuality
Until the whole nation is accepting
Of people’s identity
The students will still be battling
Misconceptions and stereotypes
Spending their nights
Dreaming of feeling like they belong
When they’ll proudly sing the song
Of the national anthem
Because they truly believe in this country again
I’m tired of fighting ignorance
It isn’t bliss
When we rationalize hate
Until there is change
We will always be struggling
To find peace in this country
