On a Search for Destruction

Location

Remember when we drove across the night

trying to reach a light at the end of the tunnel?

Every time I hear that song

it’s like you snuck into my headphones

and crawled up the wire

just to say hello

I want you to hand your breath to me

so I can hold it for you

I love saying “Sorry, I got caught up”

to teachers when you make me late for class

we can have a picnic on the freaking sun

because I love getting caught up in you

and it’s all right if you have

a fishbowl filled with tears hidden under your bed

and you killed every goldfish you ever had

the accidental murderer

I want to scribble out the month of June

and write your name instead

so I will always know

what my plans are

sometimes I find pieces of you

on paper or my skin

and I get them confused

with pieces of me

another soul on the sidewalk curb

when your eyes are ready to shatter on the ground

I want to be there to pick up the pieces

but I’ll only tell that secret

to the pages between here and now

because I’m afraid a whisper

will tickticktick in your ear

until it explodes
