Scar Tissue

I was left behind

Forgotten and abandoned

I lived in poverty

Dirty and hungry

I watched abuse

terrified and so powerless

I was snatched up by strangers

to live with someone new

Everything is awesome

I learned how to be alone

Independent and strong

I learned to be grateful and gracious

with time and with money

I learned to love

like no one had shown me before

I began to come out of my shell

blossoming and smiling

I let go of the painful memories

so I could make space for a life more beautiful

I kept those dark times sealed away,

not to forget about, but not to use as an excuse

to show I am not a victim, but an underdog

I look up in the sky and say thank you

for a life so beautiful
