To Save or To Harm

Doe eyed

That’s how they describe her

Hazel

Now they are wide with fear

He tenses

His muscles once flaunted

Not now

They can’t stop a bullet

A pause

Silence before the storm

Fearful

Can’t we protect ourselves

They say

We hid in darkness

Scared

Quiet as death approaches

We wait

We scream

Bullets ring

And we die

But rules can change

To save or to harm

To take or to arm

To train or to die

What if

We hid in darkness

Scared

Determined to live

We wait

Bodies tensed, breaths stilted

Shots

Our guns protect us

They come

They see our guns

They flee

Our job done

They kill

Law broken already

Angry

And we blame the weapon

We scream

Where is our justice

Waiting

Why do we die in vain
