The River

The Rivers are knee deep, flowing against us.

We hold hands as tight as possible.

But the rocks beneath us are slippery.

You slip and lose my hand.

I watch, petrified, as you float away from me.

I chase after you.

I catch you.

But you aren't you anymore.

Too much pain.

You lost yourself in that River.

You lost yourself in your pain

I catch you and hold you and try to heal you again.

But the biggest of your scars,

Are from me.

I did the damage, why shouldn't I do the time?

Trying to fix the unfixable.

But you aren't you anymore.

Too much scarring, too much pain.

You lost yourself in that River.

You lost yourself in your pain.

I stick around, carrying a dead weight

Of someone I once loved, but no longer exists.

I walk around missing your smile.

I walk around knowing I killed you.

I walk around begging for the past.

I walk around begging for you.

But you aren't you anymore.

Too much scarring, too much pain.

You lost yourself in that River.

You lost yourself in your pain

That Rivers just a little creek now,

But the memories are still there.

I loved you, but can I keep trying

To love someone different?

You aren't you anymore.

Too much scarring, too much pain

You lost yourself in me. You lost yourself in pain.
