Religious Love

Being in love is like a religion because,

You hold onto your lover’s features like a prayer,

Close to your heart until it’s permanently ingrained.

You do whatever you need to,

To see the light of your lover’s face at the end of the day.

Being in love is like a religion because,

You visit the temple that is their body daily

Give offerings of kisses, hugs, and kind words.

You study every sentence they ever spoke,

Following it word by word until it’s the only thing you know.

Being in love is like a religion because,

You carry around every happy moment with them,

Proudly like a prayer bead on a necklace.

You feel amazing warm inside,

When you remember that person is in your life.

Falling out of love is like a religion because,

You don’t feel anything on the inside,

When you remember that person in your life.

The necklace full of memories

Feels more like a collar now, heavy and constricting.

Falling out of love is like a religion because,

The words that you only knew

Start to feel fuzzy and out of place.

You leave less and less offerings

To the temple you once adored.

Falling out of love is like a religion because,

You start to do less and less

You haven’t seen that smile in a while.

You no longer can remember that prayer,

It has been replaced by another one.

Love is like a religion,

Sometimes you have the right one,

Other times you question it til you find another one.
