A baseball bat

and countless buckets of balls

He has been waiting for this day

forever. A chance to show what he's got

His sweat running down his face

under the high sun

as his hands, the size

of catcher's mitts

tighten their grips on the bat

He is sick of waiting,

their eyes meet one last time,

the ace pitcher,

the all-state batter.

He is ready for the pitch.

Ready to show them all.
