The reason I smile

It was to be said by everyone,

“She could live without anything.”

My heart aches, my voice reaches out.

“That isn’t true!” I cry,

pulling at the arms and hands that hold me back.

I stand here now,

free from all their grasps and stare.

What can I not live without?

“What about books? You love books.”

That is true.

I love books.

But I can make up my own if I had too.

“What about your world?

The one you can find in your pocket?”

Hands feel over the indent there.

No, that isn’t worth it either.

It isn’t the world that I need.

I continue to stare,

my hands sweating and clammy.

What could I not live without?

“What about your best friend?”

She was always there for me.

She was the one who laughed with me.

Yes, she is the one.

Out of all the things in the world.

Out of all the people in the world.

I don’t think I could live without her,

without her there in my life.

She is the reason that I can smile.
