it creeps in like a shadow

a foreign invader,

but it’s no alien

no, it’s been here before

all too familiar

but it attaches –

with a knife

starting in the back

and twisting

the pain reaches the mind

but the mind does fight back

for it’s stronger than anyone knows

but what no one knows,

it is not strong enough

the knife distorts the whole body

the mind cannot stop it from taking over

so it does

completely and entirely

reaching every organ

until it finally reaches the heart

and that’s when the mind gives up

the knife is no more

for the pain is in its entirety

a new body,

a new mind

and no one ever knows

and no one cares to notice
