Pumpkin Patch

My lips purse and blow

It clouds and floats away

I watch intently

And blow again

It reminds me

Of when we were kids.

It was icy cold,

And we were forming clouds with our breath

Pretending it was smoke.

The way you looked at me back then,

In the pumpkin patch,

Was soft and full of love

But it blew away quickly,

Fleeting,

Like our hot breath,

On that cold day.

I flick my lighter open

It flickers and waves.

It reminds me

Of when we were teens

And we went to our first concert.

We swayed and flickered,

High off of the music

I remember soaring when you kissed me

I’m blinded by a passing car,

And I freeze.

It reminds me.

Of the party.

The one where we both drank

Where we both argued,

All the way to the car.

What a horrible idea.

What

A

Stupid

Idea.

I started the engine

And swerved onto the freeway

You told me to pull over

You told me that you love me

I swayed

The car swayed

The lights flickered over us

And in that moment you blew away

I exhale again

A burning tear races down my cheek

“ I thought you quit?”

I swipe my tear.

I turn and smile
