Poetry: My Soapbox

Type 1 Diabetes has ruled my life for almost 3 years now.

Every moment, thought, and dream revolves around what my condition will allow.

At first, I fought against it all day.

I refused to believe that my diabetes will never go away.

Then, I found a coping mechanism.

Writing my poems became a form of activism.

Like a switch went off, suddenly my poems were eveything.

They were a way for me to bring

My experience to any

Who would just listen to one of my many

Poems vividly describing the life of a Type 1 Diabetic.

No longer were my poems meant to be merely an aesthetic

Delight, they now served a purpose.

A way to shine a light on us:

Those who fight this awful disease

And never have a moment where their minds are at ease.

This poem is about:
Me

This was a powerful read. Thank you for sharing. It is extremely comforting to hear that this disease cannot halt your passion for writing. You are a creator, a thinker, a pioneer. We all struggle with illnesses, but how we choose to respond is important. And I'm glad you find strength in our community at Power Poetry, and also in your poetry.
