Page 387

I want a better sex education system,

and when I say that at a family dinner

my mother chokes a little on her green beans

and gives my dad a shifty eye.

That's why I want a better sex education system:

so when I say those words aloud

they dont brand my forehead

like an open sore.

I want girls to know that

virginity isn't something physical that they can lose

for boys to know that no means no

for everyone to know that boy and girl are not the only genders that exist.

My health book in senior year has 595 pages

Out of those, only one sentence is spent on bisexuality

and one for asexuality.

What happens to the teens who have questions

about themselves or the people around them?

Questions that require more than one sentence on page 387 to answer.

Google isn't always the most reliable source

but I learned most of my sex education from the internet

Late hours reading articles and deleting search queries

always ashamed that my parents would find what I had been looking at

and interrogate me

I want kids to not be ashamed about sex.

I want the words penis and vagina to be more than just punch lines to a dirty joke.

I want people to be open about their sexuality and accepting of others

I want my mother not to be uncomfortable when I mention the sex ed system

and I want my health book to teach facts, not viewpoints.

Sex is a biological process;

No one gets unconfortable discussing mitosis.
