Outside

I was like you
And not like you

The Moon was ever present for you
Not for me
The Noises of the night sit and stare back at you, talk to you in an exasperating chatter
They've whispered to me once, but that was all

Sure, I felt how you felt
But it was different.
I did not lay on the cement, I did not struggle for food or water or warmth
But I did not have a home, same as you

I had clothes that smelled of other people, I had food paid for by governmental assistance, I had beds that had 'not yours' written all over them in black permanent marker

I was like you
And not like you
