One by One

As the first years came to an end,

the firmly planted did move and bend

The first ones wiggled and wobbled, loose and small

It was a shock as they started to fall

Oh no! Are they leaving me forever? Don't go!

The joy in growing old came slow and soon the cave began to show,

them one by one, achy and unsteady,

abandoning their places when they were ready

But what about me? Was I prepared?

It was time to face what must be fared

Natural growth was occurring, true,

although I didn't always want it to

The gaps became obvious as the years went on

Was my childhood innocence lost, gone?

My happiness presented a vast, open space

Would they ever be replaced?

As the fairy came, and I grew tall,

I missed my teeth, I missed them all
