One Long Night

All we were doing was going for a drive.
It was only supposed to be a couple of miles.
Going across flat road,
Something caught my eye,
Big and brown.
There were at least six.
I yelled, "deer,"
But too late,
As dad tried to stop,
They lunged across our lane.
As we collided with the group, we saw the fear in her eyes.
Two walked away, one barely harmed.
But she lay dead across the road.
Dad's car was damaged, no grill, bent hood, broken headlight.
The two of us are fine,
But she lay dead across the road.
That was a really dreadful night,
A December first I will never forget.
I might never forget the expression in her eyes,
As she lay dead across the road.
