Ode to a Friend

What might have been, my loyal friend;
what romance we might have shared.

'Love is friendship caught on fire,'
or so this is what I've heard.

Like fireworks,
some friendships sparkled brilliantly,
before they quickly burned out.

None became emblazed like ours;
like stars colliding fantastically.

None were kindled with such care,
whose embers burned so hot.

None crackled and none popped,
or spewed its fiery ashes
until a forest caught.

What might have been, my loyal friend;
what love we might have shared.
