She shows her phone to me and laughs aloud
At all the foolish things her friends have said,
And I ask when she’ll start to use her head
Please, stop repeating lines that you’ve been fed.
Her laughter fades, a scowl taking its place.
She doesn’t know how her emotions show
So clearly on her face.
Her eyes grow dim and mirror those of girls
Who don’t return her idle love and praise.
Still, I have tried to turn her from that world,
And still her wretched carelessness remains.
Her hidden phone and tightened lips convey
That she’ll remain forever in this vein.
