Segregation was prevalent
We had no rights
All Malcolm X wanted to do was fight
Dr. Martin Luther King saw that non-violence was the key
Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat

The way we lived wasn’t right
Not because I committed a crime
But simply because my skin wasn’t white

You beat me
You hung me
You killed me; my body
But oh no! Not my spirit

I have a dream
I refuse to sit in the back
I deserve a good education
…Just Like You…

We have come a long way
From where we were back in the day
We still have a ways to go
But it will not stop MY flow

Regardless of what anyone thinks
I am somebody
I will rise
I will soar!
