My Forefathers

Color
My skin contains color and pigment
And melanin turning me into
The beautiful queen I am.
Because I am black
And I praise the other
People with dark skin.
Sitting, chanting and leading
The fight for equal rights,
Staying without leaving
Sitting while defeating
The enemy that is prejudice
That is based on skin alone.
I thank my forefathers
Not Washington, but Carver,
Men and women alike
Shot at for blending
Sprayed at for competing
Against the enemy
White color supremacy
But I stand up and give
Gratitude to the lives that
Made mine as free as it flies today
Thank you for sitting,
Standing, marching, and preaching
For me.
