My First Love

Although my tail wags

I feel so alone

Sitting by the window

Waiting for you to come home

When theres shuffling outside the door

And the sound of keys entering the lock

I know that you've arrived back home

And that means a lot

All day I spent wondering

"Where do you go?"

When i'm sitting right here

Waiting for you to come home

That rush of excitement that enters my heart

Seeing your face makes me forget our time apart

The lonely day turns into pleasure

Welcoming back my dear owner, Heather

All day I spent, playing with my toys

But it's not the same and hardly brings me joy

Most of the day, I sit looking outside

Waiting for the sound of footsteps to walk by

On the days that you stay home

We go to the vet

Today you got told, I don't have much time left

The tumor in my body just got bigger

I wasn't in pain until four months later

The cancer spread and made me weaker

I found it harder to eat, spending less time on my feet

My muscles getting more and more weaker

When the day came to say goodbye

Tears continued to fall from your eyes

I licked them away as best as I could

Saying you loved me and always would

That day was then my last

But was kept in your memories for years to pass

You buried me under your favorite tree

The soft textured leafs reminding you of me

It took years for you to find your next love

A young boy in vet school who I reminded you of

A passion for animals and a big heart

There was hardly any time that you spent apart

As you grew older and married that boy

You never forgot me and I'm overjoyed

I flittered through your memory time and again

Reminding you that it's possible to love again
