I hear the slinging of whips across the field,
Then the ring of the freedom bell with power to heal,
The sound of the King, saying, “I have a dream”,
But as we walk in the doors – it’s hard to tune out the screams.

Where are we now?
How far have we come?
That the black and the white cannot be as one?

And I cannot help but think about,
if the entire world were colorblind,
The “colored” would be no different than “white”.

And then I think about a world
Where my siblings and I could go to school each day,
And they wouldn’t have to worry about slander,
But instead, as they should, enjoy child’s play.

But then I snap out of it.
Looking at this world as it is,
It’s hard to imagine ever having all of this.

Peace. Rights. Equality.
All things we fight for but it seems we’ll never get.
Sometimes I wonder how these leaders keep going,
I think their match is met.

All I want is to be truly free,
To be no longer attached to my history.
Although we are not physically enslaved,
We are enslaved in part.
Because the restrictions of blacks,
Is an enslavement of our hearts.

So what will you do?
What will you say
For all of this change to make way?
You don’t have an answer.
But I surely do.
I will keep up the fight
Until the changes ensue.

I will fight for my future, my family and friends
I will fight on and on, until I reach my end.
Then my children will fight, if they must.
They will fight against the whites until they turn to dust.

We will never give up,
Even when we get what we deserve,
Because even then, opinions will swerve.

People hate change,
Especially change not in their favor.
But we will make change.
That is why we labor.
