My East Texas Town

Emerging out of the rolling pastures and forests,

And marked by that old green sign, my small East Texas town begins

I am greeted by well kept lawns and hedges

The smell of barbecue and children playin'

Some strangers waving and some peeking around the edges

I continue my journey and the landscape begins to change

Royal Oaks, majestic Pines, and lonely Magnolias appear

The types of homes seem to range

Those historic homes remain as they have the last hundred years

While others have recently sprouted

Once again the landscape evolves

I cross the railroad tracks and a new atmosphere emerges

Not quiet, not loud, impossible to describe yet typical

New cars and trucks surround centarian bricks

Just as it was many years in the past, almost stereotypical

But alas my journey goes on,

To the most important place of all

Into the yard treading upon fallen pecans

I open the door and give the custom greeting of 'hey y'all!'

To a humble father, a loving mother

The excited sister, and the curious brother

We say a prayer around the dinner table and end it with "Amen!"

I feel at home once again
