My Decision

The warmth is fading,
Strength dissipating with the sun.
I’m standing here
With no promise of tomorrow

A house stands far off.
I could make it there by complete darkness.
Shelter for the night.
Perhaps even a home.

But it would sap the rest of my strength.
I don’t know if it would be worth the risk.
I could stay outside.
I’ve done it before.

The day is expiring
And night is falling fast.
I see the first star above my head.
Worry comes to greet me.

Again, I stare at the house.
There seems to be a flickering light somewhere within.
I think fondly of a glowing fire
while shivering at the cold.

But hallucinations in this place run rampant
Breaking even the strongest.
When want is always at the doorstep
You must be careful.

So here I stand
Trying to decide my path.
The flickering continues.
I bite my lip.
