My Best Dream

I see our picture on my phone.

I freeze in my tracks.

I don't swipe past.

I don't hit DELETE.

I stare.

I remember.

I remember all the fun we had.

I remember the times we laughed.

I remember the moment your lips first met mine.

I remember the words you used to say:
"I'll be yours forever.
We'll make it through somehow.

I know we're meant to be together."

But where are you right now?

You told me once you loved me.

You told me once you cared.

I see how much I meant to you now.

Just another picture on your wall.

A faded memory to whom you say,

"Hey, I think I remember that girl."

You broke my heart that November day.

You broke it right in half.

And as I still pick up the pieces,

I kind of have to laugh.

You are the one I dream of still.

You are the one I love.

And if we can never be together,

At least I can say "I have truly loved."

Other men have come into my life,

Have kissed me and held me close,

Have told me those three illusive words,

But it's you I love the most.

You always have a place here,

Here at home in my heart.

I know now we can never be together,

But I'll still love you while we're apart.

Goodbye, my one and only!

Goodbye, my one true love!

I go now for new adventures,

But I'll be seeing you in my dreams.
