Music of the World

One note flows smoothly through the air.

Instead of cutting through the silence,

The silence wraps around it.

There is music everywhere,

Even in complete silence.

Nothing is ever truly quiet.

The timid smile on the shy boy’s lips

Hints to the silent plea for acceptance.

The tear sliding down the young girl’s face

Sings of melancholy, unseen worries and times.

The clenched fists and the pursed lips

Shout out of denial and well-hidden fear.

Every silent movement, those tiny unconscious gestures

Ring through the air like a story in a song

Waiting for a reader’s eyes, a reader’s ears.

Even if you closed your eyes

Let the silence completely engulf you

The music, the sound and the notes

Would ring clearly for your ears to hear.

The animal’s cry in the heat of the hunt,

The Earth’s soothing wind or wrathful storms,

Soon blend into one single, harmonious note;

One that cannot be found within the spaces

Or the lines of a staff.

The songs of others, their many stories to tell,

Blend together into one in the end.

It is the song that most care not to hear,

It tells of lies, regret, evil, darkness, passion and betrayal;

While also sharing the merits of joy, relief, laughter, merriness, hope and life.

The one is one most do not hear.

It is the castaway of a tune

That tails us in our thoughts and dreams,

Always hovering in our unconscious, our souls.

I beg of you: close your eyes,

But keep your ears and mind wide open.

Do you hear the song?

Can you find the music of the world?
