Move To America

Afghanistan, what once was a gorgeous land
Now cremated into dust and emptiness
The Taliban pinned on every corner
Rifles loaded and eagle eyes on watch
The days my parents used to reminisce
Happiness sprayed across town
Family and friends by their side all the time
Until the year of 1980, the year everything changed
Soviets stampeded the border and took control
Foreigners flooding the streets, people frantic
What could my parents do to respond?
Move to America
Hiking through the desert, through the hills of Pakistan
My parents left their beloved home
To start a new life in the USA
The transition was emotional, the separation was hard
But all they could do was begin a new chapter
I sit here today wondering the life I could’ve lived
Probably for only a few years
My parents are happy, my family is happy
And I am happy
For my family having the courage
To move to America
