The million dollar question is Alexis what are you,
Well I am not able to fit it your black and white categories,
I'm more in the gray area,
I am the first generation to be born in America; my flag is red, white and brown,
I am not the overly sexual exotic temptress rapper/singer/actress/ *AHEM NICKI*
or whatever that you see on TV whose Trinidadian too,
Nor am I the loud mouthed angry black women the media portrays,
I...well I am a young women trying to burst through these stereotypes,
I am carrying an entire race on my back
I have to work twice as hard to get have as far,
And I’m doing all this while you’re asking the same old question “what are you mixed with, no way you’re just black”
No I don't speak Indian, and please stop asking if I’m dot or feather,
For your information I'm both
Sorry I don’t come equipped with the sing song accent
And I won’t dace a calypso on cue,
It represents struggle and freedom not just something to entertain you
I know another disappointment
I am more than this hair which I cut for this occasion,
I am not just these god forsaking hips,
I'm smart and I have my own ideas, and I'd appreciate it very much if you would acknowledge it,
I am Trinidadian, Native American, Indian and Black
I’m an Apparicio, I’m an American,
And the last time I checked I was human
So please stop asking…unless you’re going to give me that million dollars
