Midnight Reflection Under Starlight (A Cinderella Themed Poem)

Background: This poem is from the perspective of Prince Charming (Cinderella), the night Cinderella ran away from his royal ball at midnight. He sits on the balcony outside of his castle quarters on a quiet night and reflects on why the love of his life would leave him. He stares into the night sky and makes note of how beautiful several falling stars are as they race across the darkness of space. Perhaps Cinderella is somewhere staring at these same stars? Will he meet this mysterious woman ever again?

If at some time the stars decided

To flee their places, and collided

Could you simply sit and listen

As the star-showers fell?

In some dark and quiet midnight

When the world is full of hindsight

Could you hear their silent voice

With memory to tell?

If with some rhythm syncopated

Came such sky-fires unabated

Could you look to the horizon

Where their shadows rest?

When dying lights are the provision

Made for us by our weak vision

Could you look endingly

On that our eyes deem best?

If all wonder did abandon

Cosmic thrones they held in tandem

Could you hear their silent whispers

Echo through your veins?

As heaven leases captives bright

Into the openness of the night

Could you understand the reason

That my heart feels such pain?
