Mermaid Goes To College

Location

Scholarship

Ship.

The sails full of promise.

Wind,

Only moving forward with

Powers of change.

The rudder changes direction,

Waves hit,

Crash.

Water enters the hull.

Sinking, drowning,

Gasps for air.

SOS.

Financial Aid

Fin

Sharks come.

They look like innocent creatures,

Dolphins even.

Then they show their teeth.

Grin.

Devilishly gleaming

“We can help you”

With 3.86% interest of course.

You accept.

Loans,

And lone sharks.

Money.

No longer constant like the tides,

but instead like bubbles.

Coming and going.

You find yourself helpless among it all.

You must gain your sea-legs in this new world

now that you've gained a pair.

To walk purposefully on land, instead of drift at sea.

This is what happens

When a mermaid goes to college.
